I would like to
introduce Hot Rod
Institute; a school
dedicated to the
specialty car and custom
motorcycle industries,
located in Rapid City,
South Dakota. My name is
Doug LaRue, I have been
teaching specialty car
building techniques for
the past 20 years.
We may have met when I
worked for WyoTech. I
was one of the two guys
who put the Street Rod
program together for
WyoTech back in 1993. I
have been away from
WyoTech since 2003. I
helped start a school
down south in Alabama in
2003 (VC Tech). VC Tech
decided to shut their
doors the end of
September 2007. Instead
of going back to WyoTech,
and the large corporate
monster it has become. I
have decided start a
school that specializes
in Hot Rods & Custom
Motorcycles only.
Finally after all these
years the student can
train in the specialty
car industry and not
have to go through a
full repair industry
training first. At Hot
Rod Institute that is
what we are all about,
training students to go
to work for shops like
yours.
Hot Rod Institute will
give the student more of
what they really need in
an education for the
specialty car industry,
and to help them have a
better chance of being
successful in the hot
rodding industry. If a
student wants to work in
the Hot Rodding industry
they should be trained
specifically in the
specialty automotive
trades. Hot Rod
Institute is all about
Hot Rods and Custom
Motorcycles only. No
repair industry
training. I have had my
hands tied for so many
years and I could not do
much about it. Now we
can focus on what the
hot rod & specialty
shops need in an entry
level employee.
This is want I would
like you to do for HRI
and the students of Hot
Rod Institute. We would
like you to review the
web site and please ask
any question you may
have and let us know
what you think; good or
bad. Hot Rod Institute
has two customers to
serve. The students pay
the bills, and the shop
that hires them, keeps
the new ones coming in.
So thank you in advance.
If you would like to be
a regular technical
adviser and/or have your
companies name on the
employer list, please
let us know. We would
love to be able to place
the best prepared entry
level employees in a
high quality facility
like yours.
Like any school, not all
students are the same or
do they all take every
available class. So if
you receive a resume’
from a HRI student, you
need to call on the
references, and check to
make sure they had a
good working attitude
and they have trained in
the classes you would
require. I once had an
employer call and ask
how come a student he
hired was having so much
trouble doing sheet
metal type work. I
researched what classes
the student took, only
to find out the student
did not take any body or
sheet metal classes. The
student had taken Diesel
and Chassis fab and was
trying to fake his way
through sheet metal
work. That’s way you
really need to check on
the references.
One really good thing we
might be able to do for
you, is train an entry
level person you might
already have working for
you. Our classes are
split into 6, three
months areas of study.
They could take a class
that would best help
them be more productive
for your business.
Hot Rod Chassis

A student can take as
few or as many classes
as they feel they need
or can afford. HRI
doesn’t require any
prerequisites except for
HRB. Most all the
welding is taught in HRC
so they would need to
take HRC before they
could take HRB, unless
they had prior welding
experience and could
pass a welding test.
I can even send you a
copy of any one or all 6
syllabuses, so you would
know what is taught week
by week, I will include
a copy of what we charge
students and if you
would like, we have
nothing to hide.
So if you’re interested
on being apart of the
technical advising team
please let us know and I
would be very happy to
send you more
information for you to
review. If you would
like to have your
business listed on the
employer placement list
we would love to have
the opportunity to place
a well trained entry
level hot rod technician
in your business some
day. We appreciate your
time and thank you for
your interest in Hot Rod
Institute.
Sincerely,
Doug LaRue
